Katelyn was born with a medical condition known as 1P36 Deletion Syndrome. This is a genetic disorder characterized by moderate to severe intellectual disability, delayed growth, low muscle tone, seizures, limited speech ability, malformations, hearing /vision impairment and distinct facial features. The condition is caused by a deletion of the outermost band on the short arm (p) of chromosome 1.
Katelyn is now 6 years old, and weighs 50 pounds. She utilizes a backwards walker around her home, but is too unsteady to go any distance without assistance. Katelyn’s wheelchair is her main transportation outside the home which is quite difficult to accommodate in a typical vehicle. Family and Volunteers trying to lift or help Katelyn into the car experience great strain on their backs and body because, she is unable to left herself or to help place herself in the car.
Her Parents have been advised by professionals that they should consider buying a conversion van. The cost of a used conversion van will be approximately $35,000. This auction will help this wonderful family move towards their goal of making Katelyn’s traveling a more comfortable experience for all. We have already seen from the donations from our local community the willingness to support this cause and we look forward to being able to hand over a nice contribution to their cause.
